Tips for choosing secure passwords

Most Web servers are generally very secure, provided that any scripts they contain cannot be hacked and provided that you use secure passwords. Here are some tips to use when choosing passwords:

  • Never use words or combinations of words: hackers can use automated software to guess them.
  • Use random characters including mixed upper and lower case, numbers, and if supported, symbols.
  • Passwords should at a minimum be 8 characters long; but the longer they are the more secure they will be. It is not uncommon for them to be 20 characters long or more, particularly on large commercial websites.
  • If you have more than one website, use different passwords on each one.
  • Change them regularly, especially after you set up a new website for the first time.
